WHO WE ARE

about us

The Bethesda Group is the operational name for two related Organizations based in Cameroon, Central Africa, and Uganda, East Africa, namely the Bethesda Association, Buea, Cameroon, and the Bethesda Foundation Ltd, Kampala, Uganda.  The objectives of the Group are to alleviate poverty and hardship, empower women and youths, and improve social and living conditions through humanitarian and community development projects focusing on sustainability and resilience. For the time being, the Group’s work is focused on the pockets of poverty and hardship in rural communities on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda, and the North-west and South-west regions of Cameroon where poverty, hardship, and lack have been rendered acute by the on-going armed conflict in the country.

We partner with national governments, national development agencies, multilateral development banks, international development agencies, non-profit organizations, the private sector, religious organizations, and the public to implement projects and programmes in a sustainable manner in Uganda and Cameroon.

Our projects/programmes cover many sectors/issues and groups, including but not limited to:

  • Water sector: the provision of safe and potable water to communities
  • Education: rehabilitation and upgrade of primary and secondary schools
  • Public Health: rehabilitation and upgrade of health centres, clinics, and hospitals, especially in rural areas
  • Women and children: empowerment and humanitarian programmes
  • Energy: rural electrification with green energy, including off-grid (solar-powered mini-grid) electrification
  • Disabilities: campaign for improving living conditions and providing a support system for the disabled.
  • Mental Health: campaign for policy initiatives to deal with mental health in communities – early assessment and diagnosis and other support programmes.
  • Agriculture:  construction of farm-to-market roads; and seed propagation and farming improvement methods.
  • Data: data collation, analysis, and mapping.
  • Other:  climate change and variability.

Our programmes and projects are underpinned by the cross-cutting themes of humanity, resilience, and sustainability. Civil and other building works are guided by acknowledged standards or methods intended to counter the impacts of climate variability and change, and to promote resilience and efficiency. Also, strong consideration is given to the dignity of the beneficiaries of our projects/programmes to ensure stakeholders’ participation in project/programme design, development, and implementation.   Project/Pogramme designs normally include a monitoring and evaluation mechanism to evaluate lessons learned; an implementation schedule; an auditing system; a results framework; a project steering committee; and a designated project coordinator
